Ballintogher Community Centre receives €150,000 LEADER funding.

Sligo LEADER has recently provided €150,000 funding for the Local Community Centre in Ballintogher. It is planned that the Community Centre will once again become the focal point of the community and a wide range of activities are planned for the future. Under the LEADER / Rural Development Programme, the funding available to County Sligo LEADER Partnership is €10.88 million, which is the largest ever package for rural development. The LEADER Programme aims to facilitate the continued development of rural communities and rural enterprises all over County Sligo.

Chris Gonley, Operations Manager said ‘To date, since the LEADER programme got going last year, Sligo LEADER Partnership has € 1,620,000 already paid to community groups and private enterprise’s across County Sligo with commitments to new projects still going very strong’.

Sligo LEADER Partnership is distributing funding to community groups and individuals in rural areas for the range of activities to be funded under this Programme. Gerard Mullaney Chairman of Sligo LEADER Partnership has said ‘LEADER funding to these communities at this time is providing a real boost to these small rural villages, with employment and other benefits to the local economy’.

Eligible activities are varied and include: Diversification into non-agricultural activities, Support for business creation & development, Encouragement of tourism activities, Basic services including community facilities, Village renewal & development, Conservation & upgrading rural heritage and Training. The Rural Development Programme administered by Sligo LEADER Partnership is funded by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development; Europe investing in rural areas.
