Tús Programme

Sligo LEADER Partnership - TUS Programme

Tús is a new programme from the Department of Social Protection which aims to provide short-term, quality work opportunities for those who are unemployed and to provide certain services of benefit to communities. The Tús initiative is managed in Sligo by Sligo LEADER Partnership for the Department of Social Protection.

5,000 places in the Tús scheme will become available nationally during 2011, with 60 places available to Sligo. These 60 places have been randomly selected by Department of Social Protection from individuals that have been continuously unemployed for at least 12 months and “signing on” on a full-time basis and have been receiving a jobseeker’s payment (Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance) during that time.

The Department has identified the programme’s benefits and features some of which include:-
• Those who participate will improve their work readiness and will be able to apply their skills and learn new ones.
• Participants will benefit by being involved in work.
• Community and Voluntary Organisations will be able to develop and deliver services locally and benefit from the skills and experience the unemployed person can bring.

The types of community placements identified in Sligo for the scheme include:, Energy conservation work in homes and community buildings; Social care of all age groups and people with disabilities; Caretaking, securing, supervising of community buildings and spaces; Work in support of cultural and heritage activities or other relevant community support and the development and rehabilitation of walking trails.

The Tús Programme is a great opportunity for participants to develop new skills while providing services of benefit to their local community. For further details on the scheme, contact Paul Tolan (Tús Coordinator) on 071 9141138 or 087 2119170.
