Rural Recreation

Co. Sligo is one of 12 areas selected nationally for operating a scheme for the development of Rural Recreation. The brief of the Rural Recreation Officer (RRO) has changed recently to place a greater emphasis on product development, co-ordination and promotion of the broader recreation product.

Sligo LEADER Partnership Co Ltd feels that there is huge potential for the positive exploitation of the range of geographic amenities that the county possesses: mountains, inland waterways, coast etc and the activities that can happen there.

The Rural Recreation Officer works with community groups and small business enterprises to access advice, support and funding for the development and improvement of recreational projects, activity tourism and related infrastructure. Motivated by the need to assist SMEs and communities in the county, Sligo LEADER Partnership through Meehan Tully & Associates recently undertook a consultation process and subsequent study of the analysis and suggested development for the Rural Recreation product in County Sligo. The strategy will enable clear, strategic development of the recreation product and will signpost areas which will benefit from further investment.

Considerable labour and expenditure has been invested in the development of new and existing walking trails in recent years in Sligo, through the support of the office of the Rural Recreation Officer. The RRO has assisted in the development of a dedicated walks publication and walks website which showcase the best that Sligo has to offer in terms of walking.

The new website is a really useful resource in terms of the marketing and promotion of walking tourism in County Sligo. It will serve to position Sligo as a key walking destination, featuring a wide range of walks including loop walks, way-marked ways and forest walks from around the County; with stunning photographs, detailed maps and information, walkers will be spoilt for choice.
